Thoracoscopic Management of Chest Neoplasms

Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery is emerging as a valuable tool in the investigation and management of thoracic neoplasms, including those involving the pleura, lung, and mediastinum with the esophagus. Its value in diagnosis in pleuropulmonary disease is already well accepted. Its role in major resectional surgery for treating malignant lesions has yet to be established, and probably will only have a minor role. Presently, this new technique tends to be over used while surgeons continue to investigate its possibilities. Ultimately, further definition of its true role in the investigation and management of thoracic neoplasms will result in its more appropriate usage.
